People Fight Over Dirt

People fight over dirt.

People fight wars and saturate the dirt with blood.

Then they draw a line between each other.

But the dirt looks the same on both sides of the line,

Even when saturated with blood.

It looks the same to the birds and the weeds that pop up.

Other than us, life is pretty indifferent to any lines we draw.

And you can’t tell whose dirt or whose blood it is.

Any difference between the dirt on one side of the line and the other,

Is completely invisible until someone intervenes to ruin things by planting flags.

Then there will be a war over identical dirt.

The flag may change, but the dirt does not.

Lines are imagined.

Dirt is not.
