Am I God to My Fish?

2 min read

I will get this right out of the way--

There is no way that I am even remotely God to anyone but possibly my fish.

Definitely not the cat, because he believes that he is God.

But the fish are a different matter altogether.

Am i God to my fish?

I have three fish tanks in my home

One big one with many fish,

And two smaller, each containing a combative betta,

also known as the Siamese Fighting Fish.

It is said by experts that fish recognize their owners,

(But out of respect, let us say rather, we,their human companions).

They see me approaching their aquatic homes and appear excited

Knowing that from my benevolent hand will come the flakes that sustain them.

I am large and powerful.

I clean their homes and provide fresh water.

I change the nasty filter.

I check the pH of their homes.

I am mighty and can see all their deeds.

I both love them and judge them.

I also love them regardless of the color or (imagined) creed.

At times, when there is an existential crisis,

I put additives in the water to save them.

When one dies and floats belly up,

I take their companion out with a net.

They believe that he is going to a better place

(Actually, my toilet).

But they look to me and think

"The Great One has taken my cousin to be with him."

And when the Evil One (cat) looks lustfully into their home,

I make sure that their roof is secure.

Our of my benevolent hand come rocks and shells to swim around and even through.

And if I am God to the fish, sometimes the Son feeds them.

And I am grateful that my own God gives me better stuff than flakes and a plastic arch to swim through..
