There is a venerable oak tree in my yard
Older than old.
As it grows, it becomes more substantial with each passing year.
As it grows old, its branches embrace more.
It looks and reaches higher.
Its roots reach deeper.
And it is unmoved by winds and storms.
It is both rooted, yet flexible—the secret of endurance.
Az it grows it gives more shade and refreshment to others.
It protects the saplings in its shade.
As it grows old (and thicker),
It reaches higher and relies on its roots for strength, nourishment, and stability.
It silently witnesses seasons and years,
And continues to reach higher and deeper.
And so it is with the soul.
